Zell am See has a great transport network, with trains once or twice an hour to Salzburg and Kitzbühel – a colourful town that’s nicknamed Glitzy Kitz for its upmarket shops and cafés. And there are regular buses to neighbouring Saalbach, where the schnapps distillery is a must-visit, and Kaprun, with its medieval fortress and dam that With "ÖBB Transfer" directly from the train to your accommodation. The Schmittenhöhe Is a good choice although for 4 people as a one off trip it could be expensive as cable cars are expensive if purchasing single tickets (although you could walk!). I'm like 50 km away from Zell am See right now! I've just been to the largest ice cave in the world near Werfen. Really worth a visit if you ask me.
Zell am See is a town "surrounded" by mountains, whereas Mondsee and Gmunden are situated at the foothills of the Alps. You can enjoy great views in all of these towns. I have never been to Mondsee myself but Gmunden is a nice town, and Lake Traunsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut.

We selected Zell am See as a stop between Lindau and Salzburg. The hotel looks like its right out of the 1920s, but fully modern with amenities. Arrival with a bit chaotic with no parking, but the bellman took care of us and we got settled. Its a large hotel with a lot of people walking around. If you looking for a quiet location this is not
