Rocker bearings and rocker arms are prone to failure on the 690. Mine blew after only 6000 km. And repaired on warranty. They also like to consume oil, so check frequently and top off. If the engine hasn't imploded by 40000 km i would say it's solid. FWI the 2011 690 is fitted with a 654cc engine.

one more point to the 690/701 corner! i feel with those necessary mods to uncork the 690/701, it should be a fun time! im only used to street bikes, so it still feels light compared to other bikes, but not sure how the difference in weight will play out compared to a 450/500 sumo build. hoping the 690/701 makes up for it in highway ability. just cruising at 80mph without straining the motor
Mine sounds somewhat similar, my 690 always feels like a glass cannon to me. Even though I've never had any issues with it (besides damage when dropping on the trail) It just always sounds like an engine that is about to explode after someone dumped some bolts in it. 16 minutes ago, Chris Chapman said: I believe that all 690's post 2012 have a larger displacement motor (a true 690), up from 654 cc for the 08-11 model years. Once again, I am not 100% sure of this, but I believe there were no models of the "690 SMC" produced after 2011, because it became the "690 SMC-R".

I looked carefully at the 690 versus the 790. For me, it was a completely different experience between the two: the 690 felt like a slightly bigger version of my KTM 530 EXC dirt bike: engine felt the same, sound was the same, vibration was the same, etc. One ride on the 790 and it was night and day: much smoother power delivery and ride.

If you've got the money for the newer machine, there isn't really a reason to go 690, as far as I know. 15. Supermoto112 • 6 yr. ago. I would go Husky.
