If you need to play your ranger to get hero points from challenges there's 2 options I can think of: 1) Put the pet on passive. They won't attack and will stay out of combat. They can sometimes still be damaged if they're in the area when an attack hits but it will be rare.
They're mostly in HoT maps. Base game map HPs are extremely easy and only give 1 point, so trains aren't worthwhile there. PoF HPs are also much easier than HoT ones, but rewarding enough that you'll occasionally see trains for them.

Guild Wars 2. You can earn Hero Points by completing Hero challenges and leveling up, these are spent on unlocking new skills and traits in the Training tab of the Hero Panel. Completing Hero challenges in Tyria maps will grant a single Hero Point.

Don't worry about messing up anything. You get enough hero points to fully level up all of your core traits, both of your elite specs and still have more than 400 excess hero points. You can also change your traits, builds and gear at for free and as many times as you want to, as long as you aren't in combat. Get to the HP and POI above Skyclaw Peaks during the day (basic glider) I've seen a ton of people asking how to get here in map chat and I've help as many as I've seen so I thought a video would be helpful, this method doesn't require the chopper and you don't even need jumping mushrooms, keep in mind that while it is easy to get up there alone

Posted May 4, 2019. HoT is harder than PoF, but since it's clustered together, it's faster and much easier to access than PoF hero points (which are scattered around the map).
